In September 2019, Unconstrained Analytics President Stephen Coughlin wrote this prescient report titled “On the Road to Serfdom” (pdf).
It explores the erosion of free expression in Europe, particularly through the lens of the European Court of Human Rights’ (ECtHR) ruling against Austrian activist Elisabeth Sabaditsch-Wolff. Convicted for “disparaging religious doctrines,” Sabaditsch-Wolff’s case highlights the growing suppression of speech under “hate speech” laws, which the document argues lack clear definitions and are weaponized to silence dissent.
Coughlin critiques the ECtHR’s reasoning, asserting that it overburdens free expression by demanding excessive contextualization and neutrality, effectively nullifying the right. He connects this suppression to broader ideological trends, including Marxist and Hegelian influences, and warns of a deliberate effort by European elites to undermine national identities and individual freedoms.
Drawing on thinkers like Hayek and Russell, this report calls for citizens to recognize and resist the encroachment of authoritarianism disguised as tolerance and pluralism.
Ultimately, the report serves as a call to action for Europeans to defend their rights and freedoms against the growing threat of state-imposed censorship and ideological conformity. Again, Coughlin warned about this in 2019. Unfortunately Europe has not taken heed.
